Last month Common Deer performed a cover of Against Me!’s “Delicate, Petite, and Other Things I’ll Never Be” during their guest appearance on CBC Radio 2’s The Strombo Show. With their orchestral indie pop sound, Common Deer reinvented the song as a slow, stripped, haunting expression of the longing that lies within the original punk rock song. Two days after their cover aired on The Strombo Show, Laura Jane Grace (lead singer of Against Me!) tweeted to the band raving about their performance.
Today, Common Deer premiere the video of their moving performance of “Delicate, Petite, and Other Things I’ll Never Be” on Stories Behind The Songs:
Common Deer’s Sheila Hart-Owens shared the band’s connection to the song with Stories Behind The Songs:
“We are all huge fans of Against Me! and had wanted to cover one of their songs for quite some time. I chose “Delicate” as I feel a particular connection to the lyrical content and emotion in the original recording. To me, this song is a reflection on the immense, painful pressure trans women face to ‘pass’ in our society and, more largely, the ways in which all femme presentation is judged and policed on a daily basis.
As a woman in the music industry, I can relate to Laura Jane Grace’s experience of feeling like I am somehow not ‘doing it right’, having long struggled to embrace what being femme means or what it ‘should’ look like. We hope our version of this song will inspire further contemplation and conversation.”
